The "Crown City" of Coronado Coronado as it is known today began in 1886 when Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story of the Coronado Beach Company began real estate development on this picturesque peninsula. Construction of the Hotel del Coronado had been completed in 1888 for the cost of $1 million. It was in 1889 that the sugar heir John D. Spreckels bought out H.L. The mansion he built for himself on Glorietta Boulevard is now home to the fabulous, Glorietta Bay Inn.
